In a nail-biting encounter at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, the Delhi Capitals (DC) secured a dramatic one-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The match, held on March 24, 2025, witnessed remarkable performances and a spectacular comeback that left cricket enthusiasts on the edge of their seats.

LSG's Dominant Batting Display

Opting to bat first, LSG posted an imposing total of 209 for 8. The innings was propelled by explosive knocks from Nicholas Pooran, who scored 75, and Mitchell Marsh, who contributed 72. Their 147-run partnership off just 66 balls set a formidable foundation. However, DC's bowlers staged a commendable fightback in the latter overs, conceding only 48 runs in the final seven and capturing six wickets. Mitchell Starc led the bowling attack with figures of 3 for 42, while Kuldeep Yadav impressed with 2 for 20.

DC's Spirited Chase and Ashutosh Sharma's Heroics

Chasing 210, DC faced early setbacks, finding themselves at a precarious 7 for 3. The situation demanded resilience, and debutant Ashutosh Sharma rose to the occasion. Initially scoring 20 off 20 balls, Ashutosh accelerated dramatically, finishing unbeaten with 66 off 31 deliveries. His onslaught in the final overs turned the tide in DC's favor. Supporting contributions came from another debutant, Vipraj Nigam, who scored a quick 39 off 15 balls, and Tristan Stubbs with 34. DC achieved the target, reaching 211 for 9 with three balls to spare.

Captain Axar Patel's Leadership

This match marked Axar Patel's debut as the captain of Delhi Capitals, following his appointment ahead of the IPL 2025 season. Axar, India's spin-bowling all-rounder, has been a pivotal figure for DC since 2019, amassing 967 runs and claiming 62 wickets in 82 appearances. His leadership was instrumental in navigating the team through challenging moments during the match.

Visakhapatnam: A Fortunate Venue for DC

Visakhapatnam's Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium served as the alternate home venue for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, hosting this match against LSG and an upcoming fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 30. The city's passionate cricket fans were treated to a memorable game, reinforcing Visakhapatnam's reputation as a favorable venue for DC.
